Known as Rimini Airport, it is actually called Rimini and San Marino International Airport ‘Federico Fellini’.
The name was given in honour of the late director who was born in Rimini.
The airport is located in Rimini, Miramare. From the Hotel Amicizia you can reach the airport in about ten minutes.
The airport’s runway is 3,340 metres long and 45 metres wide, the longest in the region.
Until the mid-1990s Rimini Miramare Airport was an important NATO military facility. In ’95 the military infrastructure was dismantled. Currently there are only air rescue helicopters.
As a civil airport, Rimini experienced its peak traffic in the late 1960s, reaching 7,450 flights, making it one of the top five airports in Italy in terms of traffic.
Due to competition from other tourist destinations, the Federico Fellini airport lost a fair number of flights.
In the 2000s, thanks to tourism from the East, especially from Russia, the airport returned to a high level of traffic, peaking in 2011 with 11,856 flights and 920,641 passengers.
Rimini Airport is currently managed by Airiminum.
